Bio

Camille Intson, Ph.D. (she/her) is an interdisciplinary Esto-Canadian artist and researcher whose practice spans writing, performance, new and computational media, music, and installation. She is currently Assistant Professor (Teaching Stream, CLTA) in the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto, where she teaches master's level courses on critical information infrastructures, queer "GLAM" (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums), and culture and technology studio practice.

Intson's artistic research interests include trans-feminist and queer approaches to performance, making, and design; intermedial arts praxis; and conceptual-material studies of technology. Combining qualitative methods with research-creation, her work examines how new media technologies transform trans-feminist-queer politics and poetics in the creative and cultural industries. A key contribution of Intson's research lies in integrating socially vulnerable design perspectives into working prototypes of community engaged projects; moving forward, her research agenda centers on participatory and autonomous approaches to working with creative design technologies. In a call to design against the politics of the already-designed, Intson's work includes disturbing the theories and philosophies intrinsic to emerging technological tools embroiled in extractivist fantasies—for example, artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and mixed reality experiences—in order to imagine and model alternatives centred on care, desire, and community dreaming.

 

Her works have featured both nationally and internationally in theatres, gallery and museum spaces, music and literary festivals, concerts, and conference and symposium programming. Her various projects have engaged hundreds of arts workers and dozens of companies, venues, and organizations (both academic and non-academic) in collaboration, supported by over $250,000 in grants and fellowships. Recent presentations include Armastusega Eestisse: To Estonia, With Love (VEMU Estonian Museum of Canada), POEMS IN THE ASHES (2025 Canadian Folk Music Awards Nominee), Click Bush Train Bug (Tarragon Theatre/TMU School of Performance), Death to the Prometheans! (RBC Emerging Playwright, Studio180 Theatre), WALSH (Valleyview Artist Retreat via the Musical Stage Company), and JANE (Tarragon Theatre with Pantheon Projects).​​

Intson holds a Ph.D. in Information from the University of Toronto with collaborative specializations in Knowledge Media Design and Sexual Diversity Studies, in addition to a Master of Arts degree in Performance Practice as Research from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, United Kingdom. Beyond the Faculty of Information, she has also taught undergraduate courses at The Creative School (Performance) at Toronto Metropolitan University and the University of Toronto (Scarborough)'s Department of Arts, Culture, and Media. 

 

Her writing and research have appeared in The International Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media, the Journal for Literary and Intermedial Crossings, Imaginations: Journal of Cross-Cultural Image Studies, Hyperrhiz: New Media Cultures, IDEAH, TDR: The Drama Review, ArtMonthly, Canadian Theatre Review, Eesti Elu, and Intermission Magazine.

Intson is the proud recipient of numerous awards, grants, and fellowships, both artistic and academic. These include a SSHRC Joseph Armand-Bombardier CGS-D Award, Playwrights' Guild of Canada Tom Hendry Award, Hilda Wilson Fellowship in Technology, Information, and Culture, Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award (presented by Folk Music Ontario and the Ontario Arts Council), Centre for Culture and Technology Graduate Fellowship, Newmarket National Playwriting Competition Award, Best in Fringe Award, and two Canadian Folk Music Awards nominations, among others.​​​
